After ESET, another modern campus will be built in Patrónka

The Slovak Academy of Sciences has big plans. It plans to literally “dig up” its campus in the capital and make it a modern campus of the future.

It seems that Bratislava’s Patrónka will experience extensive reconstruction. For years, this part of the capital has been considered one of the most crucial traffic arteries. According to the latest information, it should gradually undergo an interesting architectural rebirth.

After the plans of the antivirus giant ESET to build a modern headquarters in Patrónka, the Slovak Academy of Sciences is coming up with a similar initiative. The Slovak Academy of Sciences has an area in this location, which it plans to turn into a modern campus.

SAV presented an ambitious project

Plenty of green space, cycle paths, but also futuristic building design. The proposals for the redevelopment of the SAV campus are really ambitious and already at first glance they give a fresh and airy impression. The bold visual design of the project emerged from an urban planning competition, the winners of which were the Slovak studio gro architekti and the British Studio Egret West.

From a rather austere socialist urbanism, the campus should become a modern yet green cutting-edge scientific workplace. To fulfil this role, it must meet the most demanding criteria for creative work, relaxation and interdisciplinary communication. It should also create an easy communication space for brainstorming from different fields of science,” Pavol Šajgalík, the head of the Slovak Academy of Sciences, specified in a press release.

According to Šajgalík, the park should also become a relaxation zone for the citizens of Bratislava. After the project is completed, traffic should be diverted outside the area along its perimeter, but at the same time its inner space should be made accessible to pedestrians. The park is to be called Helix and should raise public awareness of the scientific activities of the SAS.

“The main themes of our proposal are firstly: opening the site to the public, creating a new park, a new destination for the public. Second: reorganization of the SAV institutes into thematic clusters, groupings of buildings to improve interaction between the individual institutes and to make it easier to present science to the public,” Juraj Palovič of gro architekti told Forbes.

According to Palovic, these two main ideas are also meant to automatically connect to neighboring campuses, improve wayfinding in the area, and “reinforce the landscape character of the campus.”

As underlined by SAV in its official report, the competition was also a form of public procurement. The winning studios will thus receive a contract from the academy to create an urban-landscape study and project documentation. The latter is to be part of the first stage of the redevelopment of the site.
